Ludwig Ernst von Borowski (born June 17, 1740 in Koenigsberg ; † November 10, 1831 there ) was a German Protestant clergyman, most recently general superintendent and archbishop.

Life

Borowski was the son of a lacquer manufacturer and court bell ringer at the Königsberg castle church . In 1755 he was a student of Immanuel Kant at the Albertus University in Königsberg . From 1762 he worked as a field preacher in Sorau , from 1770 as the Lutheran archpriest of the Schaaken inspection in Schaaken (East Prussia) . In 1782 he was appointed pastor to the Neurossgärter Church in Königsberg (Prussia) . From 1793 he was royal special commissioner for churches and schools and from 1804 consistorial councilor .

Borowski enjoyed the unreserved esteem of Frederick the Great and his successors. This was especially true for Friedrich Wilhelm III. who remained in contact with Borowski after the death of Queen Luise through letters of comfort.

As senior consistorial advisor (1809) and general superintendent (1812), Borowski had a great influence on the school system. In 1815 he became chief preacher at the castle church , in 1816 bishop and finally in 1829 archbishop of the Evangelical Church of Prussia . He founded the Association of Bible Friends, in 1814 the Prussian Bible Society , the Königsberg Mission Association and in 1822 the Mission Directorate.

Borowski received the Order of the Black Eagle in 1831 and was thus ennobled .
