Peter Maser

Peter Maser (born August 3, 1943 in Berlin ) is a German Protestant church historian . He is committed to coming to terms with the SED dictatorship.

Life

After attending the Pforta state school , Maser studied Protestant theology at the University of Halle from 1962 until his diploma in 1968 . From 1969 to 1976 he was a research assistant to Konrad Onasch in Halle and received his doctorate there in 1971. He lost his job in 1976 because he had applied for an exit visa . After moving to the Federal Republic of Germany , from 1977 he was a research assistant at the EKD Church Office in Hanover and a lecturer at the University of Münster . There he received his habilitation in church history in 1988 . In 1993 he was appointed adjunct professor for church history and Christian archeology. From 2001 he was director of the Eastern Churches Institute and head of the department for Christian archeology and the history of church art in the Protestant theological faculty of the University of Münster. In 2008 he retired.

From 1992 to 1994 he was a theological consultant in the secretariat of the German Bundestag's Enquete Commission “ Coming to terms with the history and consequences of the SED dictatorship in Germany”, and from 1995 to 1998 he was an expert member of the German Bundestag's Enquete Commission “Overcoming the Consequences of the SED -Dictatorship in the process of German unity ". Since 1998 he has been a member of the board of trustees of the Foundation Archives of the parties and mass organizations of the former GDR in the Federal Archives , since 1999 chairman of the scientific advisory board of the Federal Foundation for the Study of the SED dictatorship , since 2013 chairman of the scientific advisory board of the Ettersberg Foundation and member of the scientific advisory board of Luther decade. In June 1998 he received the Order of Merit 1st Class of the Federal Republic of Germany .

Since 1995 Maser has been co-editor of the international half-yearly publication Kirchliche Zeitgeschichte .
