Johann Friedrich Miethe (born June 1, 1791 in Halle ; † October 24, 1832 in Potsdam ) was a Lebküchler in Potsdam and from 1828 was the first to produce chocolate with the help of a steam engine , the so-called steam chocolate .

Life

Johann Friedrich Miethe was the first of five children of the Pfefferküchler Friedrich August Miethe (1753–1827) from Halle (the founder of the Halloren chocolate factory ) and Friederike Henriette Sophie Miethe, née. Dam (1766-1803).

In 1820 Miethe moved to Potsdam and opened a shop on Bassinplatz . He refined the processing of chocolate through a special process with the help of a steam engine. In order to enable production on a larger scale, he acquired the aristocratic palace with the address Am Schloß 1 and converted it into a factory. His new process soon made it possible to produce "about 1000 pounds of chocolate a day in Berlin". His steamed chocolate became a quality product and was sold all over Germany. He was attacked in public by his competitors, who still produced handcrafted chocolate: his steamed chocolate was by no means better, and the special name was therefore more than misleading. Miethe defended himself against these attacks with a detailed description of his production method . Brief description of the old and new chocolate-making methods .

In 1832 Miethe founded a second factory in Nuremberg together with the businessman Heinrich Lorenz Birkner (1792–1864) .

Miethe married Emilie Blumenthal from Berlin in 1821 in Hallesches Dom . The first of his nine children is the future artist Friederike Miethe . His son Albert Miethe is the father of the inventor of color photography Adolf Miethe and the grandfather of the writer Käthe Miethe .
