Johann Friedrich Schröter (born December 11, 1770 in Leipzig ; † April 2, 1836 there ) was a German draftsman , engraver and painter .

biography

Schröter was a student of Adam Friedrich Oeser . In 1792 he enrolled in Leipzig to learn anatomy. Already two days after the death of his predecessor Johann Stephan Capieux, he applied for the position of university master of drawing “at the anatomical theater” of the University of Leipzig on June 10, 1813. He held this position until his death in 1836.

Schröter gained a considerable reputation as an engraver and draftsman of scientific and anatomical objects, which is also reflected in his club membership. On September 16, 1794, he became a member of the Natural Research Society in Leipzig . Schröter made engravings for almost every important anatomist of his time. These included Justus Christian Loder (1753–1832) and Johann Christian Rosenmüller (1771–1820). Schröter also worked as a book illustrator and even an author on human anatomy. At least there are drawings and engravings by Rosenmüller, with whom he was very friendly. Numerous portraits in the engraving have come down to us. Wegner has an (incomplete) overview of the anatomical works for which Schröter supplied drawings and engravings.

He is not to be confused with the genre painter Johann Friedrich Carl Constantin Schroeter . There is no family relationship with the opera singer and actress Corona Schröter .
