Johann Friedrich Zihn
Johann Friedrich Zihn (born September 7, 1650 in Suhl ; † January 16, 1719 there ) was a German Evangelical Lutheran clergyman and poet of sacred songs .
Live and act
Zihn was born on September 7, 1650, the son of the town clerk and court clerk of Suhl, Marcus Zihn and his wife Marthe Hartungen. He attended the city school in Suhl and then the alumni (boarding school) of the Princely Saxon Community Henneberg High School in Schleusingen . This was followed by a seven-year study of theology and philosophy in Leipzig, which he completed in 1675 with a master 's degree. In 1679 he became rector of the school in his hometown Suhl, in 1690 sub- and in 1708 archdeacon . Zihn was rarely ill in his life. Still very sprightly at an advanced age, he succumbed to tuberculosis on January 16, 1719 at the age of 68.
In 1687 Zihn married Marie Elisabeth Winter. The couple had a son, Johann Ludwig, and a daughter.
In addition to the publication of a Latin textbook, Zihn worked as a hymn poet .
In older hymn books five songs by Zihn could be found, among them the God is still alive! Soul, why are you despairing? , the text of which was set to music by Johann Sebastian Bach in 1736 ( BWV 461).
