biography

Ganten came from a family that had lived in Stinstedt since at least 1650. His parents' house was today's restaurant Waidmannsruh on the Ringstrasse. The maternal ancestors were craftsmen based in the Lüneburg Heath. His maternal grandfather moved from the heath to Geestendorf and founded a construction business there with his brother Heinrich.

Ganten lived in Geestemünde in the Neumarktstr. 24. The house had been built by his father. In 1914 Ganten moved to Freschluneberg, where he had the Villa Ganten built.

In Freschluneberg, Hans-Heinrich Ganten was local group leader of the NSDAP from autumn 1934 to January 1, 1938; he had three sons. The two older ( Hans and Reinhard) are well-known lawyers. The youngest ( Detlev ) is a molecular medicine specialist and was Chairman of the Board of Charité Berlin from 2004 to 2008.

Citizens' park establishment

In 1899, Ganten and two colleagues in Bremerhaven gave the impetus to prepare a small piece of forest near the town of Geestemünde as a place to relax for the citizens. Mayor Klußmann endorsed the plan, and on December 12, 1899 the Geestemünder Waldverein was founded. The Bürgerpark in Bremerhaven was opened on June 1, 1908.
