Johann Georg Hamann (the elder)
Johann Georg Hamann also Haamann (* between July 10 and November 25, 1697 in Wendisch-Ossig, today Osiek Łużycki ; † July 14, 1733 in Hamburg ) was a German librettist and writer .
Life
Hamann, like his famous nephew of the same name, Johann Georg Hamann, came from a family of pastors in Lusatia. After studying law at the University of Leipzig and a member of the “German Society” there, Hamann turned to Hamburg. Here he was tutor to Hans Statius von Hagedorn, the father of Friedrich von Hagedorn . He published articles in the magazine “Vernunftigen Tadlerinnen”, which was edited by Johann Christoph Gottsched . In 1721 he published a continuation of the popular baroque novel "The Asian Banise", the first part of which Heinrich Anselm von Ziegler and Kliphausen had written. He published several weeklies in Hamburg and from 1731 to 1732 was the editor of the “ Hamburgischer Correspondenten ”. He was also friends with Barthold Heinrich Brockes and wrote libretti for operas by Georg Philipp Telemann .
