Johann Georg Kühnhausen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Georg Kühnhausen (* 1640 ; † 1714 in Celle ) was a German musician and composer of the Baroque .

Life

From 1661 he worked in Celle as court musician and singer in the court orchestra of the Principality of Lüneburg . During this time he also held the office of city cantor of Celle.

Kühnhausen's only surviving work is the Passio Christi secundum Matthaeum from around 1700 . This Passion is a work for four-part choir, solo parts ( soprano , tenor and bass ) and figured bass . The low level of instrumentation in particular sets the Passion apart from comparable contemporary works. The same applies to the renunciation of the burial of Jesus , which is included in most of the Passions. The gospel text is only interrupted by a few chorales . The multiple recurring chorale "Jesus, my life's life" by Ernst Christoph Homburg , whose melody comes from the Celle court organist Wolfgang Wessnitzer , is of particular importance.
