Johann Hartmann (printer)
Johann Hartmann (born March 3, 1537 in Mehlis , † May 20, 1607 in Frankfurt (Oder) ) was a German printer and publisher.
Life
Johann Hartmann came to Frankfurt (Oder) as a bookbinder and married a daughter of the bookseller Johannes von Ingolstadt there around 1562. Around 1585 he founded with the support of teachers at the local university a book publisher. Together with his son Friedrich (* 1563) he succeeded in breaking through the sovereign printing privilege of Johann Eichorn's office , so that in 1595/1596 he was able to publish a Hebrew Bible in his own print shop, which sold well. In 1599 Hartmann began to print his own music, which gradually made his publishing house the main printing company for cantor music in the German north-east.
The printing and publishing house "Hartmann Father and Son" came to a standstill at the end of 1631 as a result of the devastation of the city by the Swedes .
