Johann Heinrich Crevelt

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Heinrich Crevelt (baptized June 28, 1751 in Bonn ; † August 25, 1818 there ) was a German doctor and scientist.

Life

Johann Heinrich Crevelt completed his training in Vienna and Paris . He practiced in Bonn from 1782 and was friends with Ludwig van Beethoven , whom he saw guided by Mozart's genius, as he wrote in an entry in the beethoven studbook in 1792. An etched Beethoven portrait that he sent to the Bonn reading society was to become Crevelt's possession if Beethoven had sent the reading society a painted portrait as a replacement. However, this never happened.

Crevelt, who in 1787 was one of the founders of this Bonn reading society and also worked as a translator of scientific works, put together a large natural history collection that also included a crocodile in an egg. It is possible that a remark made by Johann Heinrich Merck in a letter to Anna Amalia von Sachsen-Weimar and Eisenach on May 17, 1784 referred to this piece from Crevelt's collection.

In 1819, 675 volumes from Crevelt's library passed into the possession of the University and State Library of Bonn , where they are still located today. His scientific collection, however, is lost.
