Johann Heinrich Martius

Johann Heinrich Martius (* 1677 in Mittweida ; † September 22, 1756 in Wittenberg ) was a German literary scholar.

Life

Martius attended the University of Leipzig from October 3, 1703 and obtained the degree of master's degree there on February 9, 1708 . Following his studies, he worked as the rector of the Princely School St. Afra in Meißen . On September 17, 1735 he was appointed professor of poetry at the University of Wittenberg , which, after he had enrolled in the matriculation on October 18, was admitted to the faculty of philosophy on October 25 as an adjunct and on November 5 of the same year started.

Martius was influenced by the efforts of Johann Christoph Gottsched from Leipzig, on whose textbooks "Attempt at a Critical Poetry" (Leipzig 1730) and "Outline of a Reasonable Oratory" (Hanover 1729) he gave lectures. In addition, his lectures dealt with contemporary European history from public reports in newspaper colleges. He held the professorship for poetry until the end of his life.
