Johann Daniel Ritter

Johann Daniel Ritter (born October 16, 1709 in Schlanz , † May 15, 1775 in Wittenberg ) was a German historian .

Life

Born as the son of a cavalry captain of the imperial troops Johann Ritter in Silesia and his wife Anna Rosina (née Böhme von Hujaschnitz), he trained in Frauenstadt and Breslau in order to start studying at the University of Leipzig on May 31, 1730 . There he acquired the academic degree of a master’s degree on February 21, 1732 and then began to give lectures in Leipzig.

Thereupon he was appointed associate professor of philosophy in 1735 , was appointed councilor and in 1742 went to the University of Wittenberg as a full professor of history . In addition, he was appointed professor of ethics after he had turned down a call to the University of Leiden in 1761 . In 1748 the law faculty of the University of Göttingen awarded him a doctorate without applying for it. However, he stayed in Wittenberg until the end of his life.
