Johann Heinrich May the Younger

Johann Heinrich May the Younger (also Henrich Majus, May; born March 11, 1688 in Durlach ; † June 13, 1732 in Gießen ) was a German orientalist and Hebrew.

Life

Johann Heinrich May the Younger was a son of Johann Heinrich May the Elder . From 1702 he studied at the University of Giessen , where he obtained the academic degree of a master's degree in philosophy in 1707 . Then he continued his studies at the University of Altdorf , made a trip to Vienna in 1708 and then continued his studies at the University of Jena . In 1709 May was appointed professor for Greek and Oriental philology in Giessen.

Before taking office, he made a trip to Denmark . From 1713 he supported Zacharias Konrad von Uffenbach in cataloging his library, the first catalog of which appeared in 1720. In 1716 May also received the professorship in Classical Studies, in 1720 he became inspector of the schools in Upper Hesse and died unmarried. He left his library to the Giessen Academy in 1733, along with his coin collection.
