Johann Heinrich Sievers , also Heinrich Sievers (born May 17, 1811 in Lübeck , † 1876 in Bern ) was a German bookseller and publicist.

Life

Sievers was the son of the landlord and later landowner Peter Sievers. He grew up on Gut Klein Krankow (now part of Bobitz ). After completing his studies and doctorate, he became a bookseller and in 1845 received a license to run a bookshop in Wismar . This was the second bookstore in town; it was initially located at Am Markt 17 and then at Krämerstraße 17.

During the revolution in Mecklenburg (1848) he was one of its leading figures in Wismar. In 1849 he founded the radical democratic weekly newspaper Mecklenburgische Volkszeitung. Sunday paper for the city and state of Wismar , later Mecklenburgische Dorfzeitung . In 1850 he was sentenced to a lengthy prison term in a high treason and libel suit. He evaded starting his sentence by fleeing to England. Before that he had already handed over the publishing house and the edition of the Mecklenburgische Dorfzeitung to Gustav Siedenburg , who directed it until it was banned on July 17, 1851 and his own emigration to the USA.

After losing his fortune in England, Sievers returned to Mecklenburg in 1860 and served his sentence in the Bützow-Dreibergen prison . From 1861 he worked as a journalist for the Leipziger Journal and as a writer of political contemporary poems.
