Johann Heinrich Wieland
Johann Heinrich Wieland (born February 14, 1758 in Waldenburg , † May 4, 1838 in Basel ) was a Swiss lawyer, governor, mayor of Basel and finance minister of the Helvetic Republic . He was a member of the Federal Legation at the Congress of Vienna .

He was the son of the Reformed pastor Johann Heinrich Wieland and Dorothea Buxtorf and had the citizenship of Basel. His first marriage was to Valeria Weiss (1786) and the second to Maria Magdalena Schweighauser (1790), daughter of the Basel Grand Councilor and cantonal judge Johann Schweighauser.
Life
After studying law at the Universities of Basel and Göttingen , he obtained his doctorate in 1786. iur. in Basel. In 1782 he joined the Basel civil service as chancellor, 1786 mayor of the court, 1796 town clerk in Liestal , 1798 to 1801 president of the Basel administrative chamber, 1801 governor of the canton of Basel , 1802 finance minister of the Helvetic Republic. From 1803 to 1812 he worked as a state clerk, from 1812 to 1832 as mayor and several times as a delegate to the Diet . In 1813 he became a member of the federal embassy, which presented Napoleon's declaration of neutrality in Paris , and from 1814 to 1815 he represented Switzerland as envoy at the Congress of Vienna . In 1816 he was appointed Austrian baron. Politically a liberal, Wieland campaigned for freedom of trade, orderly state finances and education.
