Johann Hermann Bousset

Johann Hermann Bousset (born May 10, 1828 in Lübeck ; † April 1, 1901 there ) was a German Evangelical Lutheran clergyman and pastor at St. Lorenz pastor in the Lübeck suburb of St. Lorenz .

Life

Bousset was born as the son of the Lübeck wine merchant of Huguenot origin, Franz Bousset.

Therese Bousset , who set Thomas Mann a literary monument as Therese Weichbrodt in his 1901 novel Buddenbrooks , was his aunt.

career

After visiting the Katharineum and graduating from high school in Easter 1847, Bousset studied Protestant theology at the universities of Halle , Bonn and Berlin . The teachers, from whom he received deep suggestions, he should keep in grateful memories into old age. These included August Tholuck , Bleeck, Richard Rothe , August Twesten and Albrecht Ritschl .

In October 1851 he took the theological exam in his hometown . After working as a teacher at the von Großheim Realschule and other schools in Lübeck , as was customary at the time, he was elected pastor at St. Lorenz Church on April 23, 1861 .

When he took office, his congregation had between 200 and 300 members. Due to the urban development of Lübeck since 1864 , the suburb of Lübeck-St. Lorenz and with it the community rapidly. On April 23, 1882, when Johannes Bernhard was hired as the second pastor, the number of congregation members was already around 9,000; in the last few years the number doubled again. In 1895, at the request of the Council of Churches , the Synod decided to divide the parish and build two new churches. St. Matthäi was consecrated on March 25th and St. Lorenz on May 6th, 1900.

Bousset, who was also responsible for keeping the church records , was the chairman of the church council from 1871 to 1895 .

Due to his increasing hearing loss , Bousset resigned from his office on October 1, 1898 .

In addition to friends and relatives, numerous members of his community, in which he still enjoyed a high reputation , gave his coffin their last escort when he left his house on April 6, 1901 at Lachswehr-Allee 4.

family

Bousset was married to Auguste Wilhelmine, nee Hartwig (born February 25, 1837, † April 1897) since 1862. She was a daughter of his community and came from the Hartwig family in Lübeck, the owners of the important commercial gardeners Steltzner and Schmalz . The pastor family had one daughter and three sons:

  • Wilhelm (1865–1920), was a professor of theology
  • Theodor (1869-1915)
  • Hermann (1871–1953) became a publisher
  • his daughter Elisabeth (1867–1942) looked after him after his retirement.
