Johannes Phocylides Holwarda

Johannes Phocylides Holwarda (* 1618 in Holwerd ; † January 22, 1651 in Franeker ; actually Jan Fokkes van Holwerd ) was a Frisian astronomer .

Holwarda studied under Adriaan Metius in Franeker and held lectures on logic since 1639 . In 1640 he became a doctor of medicine , in 1647 professor of philosophy . In addition, he studied theoretical and practical astronomy . In 1638 he succeeded in rediscovering the star Mira , which had been forgotten after its first discovery by David Fabricius . In 1639 he succeeded in determining the period of the fluctuations in brightness of the variable star to be about 11 months. In 1640 he examined the astronomical tables of Johan Philip Lansberg in his Dissertatio astronomica and found numerous errors.

In honor of Holwarda, the moon crater Phocylides was named after him.
