Johann Joseph Schmitz

Johann Joseph Schmitz (also spelled Johan Joseph Schmitz , born April 19, 1784 in Hanover , † after December 1816 ) was a German draftsman and painter .

Life

Johann Joseph Schmitz learned the beginnings of his arts from his father in Hanover, before moving to Amsterdam for further training . There he became a student of the painter Benjamin Wolff .

In the Netherlands , Schmitz primarily created portraits and historical depictions, then landscapes and views in particular. He was so successful that he by the Dutch government to the time to the Dutch East Indies scoring island of Java was sent where to draw "the most important points." Provided with this order, Schmitz set sail in December 1816 with the frigate Hoop en Fortuin , which undertook an expedition to Canton in China from 1816 to 1819.

Nothing is known about Schmitz's further whereabouts, nor are any works of art known from him.

The Amsterdam draftsman and engraver Hendrik-Willem Caspari created a portrait of the artist .
