Johann Justus Berkelmann (born October 3, 1678 in Rosdorf ; † February 22, 1743 in Nordhausen ) was a German Lutheran theologian , general superintendent of the general dioceses of Alfeld and Grubenhagen, and royal British and Brunswick-Lüneburg consistorial councilor.

Life

Berkelmann, a son of pastor Petrus Valentin Berkelmann in Rosdorf and grandson of theologian Theodor Berckelmann , attended high school in Göttingen and studied theology at the University of Helmstedt . In 1704 he became field preacher in the Braunschweig Legion, 1708 pastor in Hedemünden , 1713 pastor at St. Albani in Göttingen and in 1718 first pastor in Alfeld . From 1721 he was also general superintendent and member of the consistory in Hildesheim. In 1726 he was - against his will and against the objection of the council, citizenship and guild masters of the city of Alfeld - as pastor at the castle church and general superintendent of Grubenhagen and on the Harz to Osterode . He kept the title of consistorial councilor, but this was no longer associated with a corresponding position. Berkelmann worked on the compilation of the Hildesheim hymn book. In 1735 he was dismissed from service for misconduct in the conduct of life and in the administration of church funds. He settled in Duderstadt and later in Nordhausen, where he was still active as a writer and died in 1743.
