Johann Carl Girard de Soucanton (born June 21 . Jul / 2. July  1785 greg. In Tallinn , † December 10 jul. / 22. December  1868 greg. ) Was an Estonian entrepreneur and politician.

Life, entrepreneurship, politics

The Girard family originally came from the French countryside of Languedoc-Roussillon . In the first half of the 18th century, it entered the tsarist empire via northern Germany. The family posed as Huguenot noblemen who had to flee France. In 1770, Johann Karl Girard (1732–1799), the father of Johann Karl Girard de Soucanton, settled in Tallinn (German Reval ). Four years later he became a citizen of the Estonian capital Tallinn.

She quickly demonstrated her economic skills in the Baltic States . Through a skillful marriage and inheritance, Johann Karl Girard (the elder) also became the owner of the foreign trade company Thomas Clayhills & Son in 1782 . His wife, Anna Dorothea Hetling (1746–1815), was the daughter of Tallinn's mayor Carl Nicolaus Hetling (1707–1781).

After the death of his father in 1799, Johann Karl Girard de Soucanton took over the Thomas Clayhills & Son company as heir . He increased his wealth in 1826 by founding a cloth factory in Kärdla ( Kertel ) and building the railway connection between Tallinn and Saint Petersburg . The inauguration of the railway line shortly after Johann Karl Girard de Soucanton's death brought the breakthrough for the industrialization of Estonia as well as an enormous increase in the handling of goods and the transport industry.

Johann Karl Girard de Soucanton was also the owner of the Kunda (from 1851) and Röa estates . He held the title of Commerce Councilor and was the French consul in Tallinn.

At the same time he was politically active. From 1826 he was councilor and in 1837 treasurer in Tallinn. From 1837 to 1864 he held the office of mayor. Both positions had already been held by Father shortly before the end of his life.

On December 10, 1862, the title of nobility of the Girard de Soucanton family was confirmed by Tsar Alexander II . The Tsarist nobility diploma was issued on April 2, 1865. On 13 March 1865, the family was in the Adelsmatrikel the Estonian knighthood entered.

Private life

On June 10, 1810, Karl Johann married the Baltic German noblewoman Eleonore Christina Johanna von Scheurmann (1786–1861). The marriage resulted in nine children.

The sons Edmund Girard de Soucanton (1810–1861) and Arthur Girard de Soucanton (1813–1884) later ran the Thomas Clayhills & Son company . The second son, Theodolph Girard de Soucanton (1812–1878), was a colonel in the tsarist army. The youngest son Johann Karl "John" Girard de Soucanton (1826–1896) later founded the cement works in Kunda.
