Johann Karl Lichtenhahn

Johann Karl (also Karl Johann) Lichtenhahn (born April 26, 1805 in Basel , † January 30, 1860 in Muttenz ) was a Swiss lawyer and historian. Lichtenhahn was the son of council clerk Carl Christoph Lichtenhahn and Johanna Lichtenhahn-Holzach. He was also the nephew of Colonel General Ernst Ludwig Lichtenhahn ; he originally came from the Liechtenhan family .

After his schooling, he began at the University of Basel , a law degree , graduating in 1833 with a doctorate. Since 1829 he was already active as a notary and registrar; from 1834 he took over the office of council clerk from his father, in 1836 he became a state clerk in Basel and a member of the Basel Historical Society.

In 1848 Lichtenhahn resigned from all offices and moved to the suburb of Muttenz , where he managed his own estate from 1850 and was politically active in the local council. Lichtenhahn wrote various historical publications on Basel's history. Lichtenhahn died in Muttenz in 1860. He was married twice but had no children; two great-grandchildren of his brother (great-great-nephew) are the actor Fritz Lichtenhahn and the musicologist Ernst Lichtenhahn .
