Johann Klefeker (born August 14, 1698 in Hamburg ; † November 2, 1775 there ) was a German syndic .

Live and act

Klefeker was the son of a finance clerk. He first studied law at the University of Tübingen , where he obtained the degree of licentiate in 1720 . He then traveled through Germany and Scandinavia and from 1721 took on diplomatic tasks in the interests of Hamburg, including as envoy in Vienna . From 1725 he took up a position as a lawyer in Hamburg and significantly influenced the politics of the Hanseatic city over the next few decades . He created collections of constitutions and legal texts, which represented basic information for the city administration, the economy and the jurisprudence. His documents are often the first historical accounts in these fields.

Klefeker was one of the most important supporters of the Enlightenment in Hamburg.
