Johann Matthias Leitner, from Bavaria, who is often also written as Mathias Leitner , can be traced back to Graz as a sculptor from 1723. Especially his works from the 1730s and 1740s are known today. These include the Kapfenberg plague column, created in 1738 and erected on the main square. The group of sculptures (a copy) has stood in a small park next to the parish church of St. Oswald since 1969 .

In the 1740s in particular, Leitner earned some work at Rein Abbey . For example, in a stucco- decorated niche in the central portal of the collegiate church, there is a statue of St. Bernard made by Leitner in 1743 , which is flanked by two angels. In addition, there are three figures, also by Leitner, placed on the gable facade, representing faith, love and hope. The statues on the side altars of the collegiate church are also by Leitner. In addition to the figures on the side altars, Leitner is likely to have made a large part of the remaining altar sculptures around 1745. An oval relief with a portrait of Abbot Georg Freyseisen , who died in 1605, dates from around 1740 and is also attributed to Leitner. The tomb of the abbot Placidus Mally, who died in 1745, with its richly decorated rocaille ornament frame in shell style shows a figure of a seated Fama allegory, made by Johann Matthias Leitner, leaning against a relief portrait of the abbot. The other stone carvings on this tomb date from 1754 and were carried out by Andreas Zailler .

In addition, Leitner created the pulpit of the pilgrimage church Maria Lebing (1746 to 1747), as well as the pulpit of the parish church of Hartberg (1753).
