Placidus Mally OCist (born May 6, 1670 in Graz ; † February 14, 1745 ) was an Austrian clergyman and the 42nd abbot of the Rein Cistercian monastery in Styria .

Life

Placidus Mally was born on May 6, 1670 as the son of a baker in Graz and was orphaned at a young age. He studied at the Universities of Ljubljana and Graz and, after being ordained a priest (1694), joined the Rein Abbey in 1698. Here he made his profession on October 4, 1699 , was then a year sacristan , then a cooperator in Semriach and in 1701 rose to subprior in the monastery. After the death of the previous abbot of Rein Abbey, Jakob Zwigott , on November 20, 1709, less than two months later, on January 10, 1710, Mally was elected to succeed Zwigott as abbot. During his 35-year tenure, Mally developed into the largest builder in the history of Rein Abbey and gave the monastery its current Baroque appearance , including the expansion of the prelate's court in 1720 and its church .

Due to the assumption of a high debt burden from his predecessor, which had to be paid off, it was almost ten years before the Romanesque basilica could be removed in 1738, with the exception of a few remains. Immediately afterwards, work began on the new building, which was completed in 1747, two years after Mally's death. On August 19, 1742, Mally still assigned the building shell. The consecration was because Mally already died and the archbishopric of Salzburg was vacant at the time, Mally's successor Marian Pitt Empire on November 5, 1747. All his life was four times Mally as a deputy in the Styrian country team selected and was twice of the stands with important major orders to the court of Emperor Karl VI. sent. On February 14, 1745, Mally died at the age of 74 and was buried in the new crypt under the collegiate church the afternoon of the day after next. The tomb of Mally has a rocaille ornament frame richly decorated in shell style . It shows the figure of a seated Fama allegory made by Johann Matthias Leitner , leaning against a relief portrait of the abbot. The other stone carvings on this tomb date from 1754 and were carried out by Andreas Zailler . Mally's successor Marian Pittreich, who remained in office for around 26 years until his death in 1771, was subsequently in charge of the baroque interior design of the collegiate church.
