Marianus Pittreich was born in Maribor in 1708 as the son of a merchant. The wealthy parents sent him to the parish school in Ruše near Maribor (1716) and in 1718 to study at the Jesuit college in Graz . In 1724 he was ordained a Cistercian in Rein Abbey and in 1731 in Seckau . In 1745 he was elected abbot, where he headed the monastery until his death in 1771.

His most important merits are the completion of the new building of the collegiate church under the direction of the Graz court architect Johann Georg Stengg , which he consecrated in 1747, and the interior decoration of the church in the late Baroque style, which continued into the 1760s. Important elements are the frescoes by the painter Joseph Adam von Mölk and the high altar by the Graz sculptor Jakob Payer (the altar sheet by Martin Johann Schmidt is from a later period). The purchase of a large part of the Ferdinande library - Empress Maria Theresa had a smaller part transported to Vienna - also fell during his time. As a visitor he exercised careful supervision over the monasteries in his area of responsibility, as far as Carniola and Carinthia, and was a sought-after advisor for their abbots.

He died in 1771 in Rohr Castle and was buried under the presbytery of the collegiate church.
