Jakob Zwigott OCist (* 1643 or 1644 in Graz ; † November 20, 1709 in Rein ) was an Austrian clergyman and the 41st abbot of the Rein Cistercian monastery in Styria .

Life

Jakob Zwigott was born in Graz around 1643/44 and probably comes from the Zwigott family of artists. In 1664 Zwigott enrolled at the University of Graz . In 1667 he entered the Rein Abbey under Abbot Balthasar Stieber and made his profession on March 20, 1667 , before celebrating his first Holy Mass in 1671 . From 1675 to 1677 Zwigott was parish vicar in Gratwein , in 1693 in St. Pankrazen near Gratwein and in 1695 provost in Straßengel . As a former pupil of the Jesuit Convict in Graz, Zwigott was in theTrained rhetoric and also had a strong inclination for astronomy . After the death of the previous abbot of Rein Abbey, Alanus Matt , on July 4, 1696, Zwigott became not even two months later, on August 19, 1696, under the chairmanship of Vicar General Marian Schirmer of the Abbey , delegated by Father Abbot Candidus Pfister of the Ebrach Monastery Heiligenkreuz elected to succeed Matt as abbot. The abbots von Sittich , Anton Gallenfels , and Schlierbach , Nivard Dierer , acted as electoral assistants , who also assisted with the benediction by Abbot Marian the following day.

Issued a lapel to the government on August 21, 1696, he was introduced to the Styrian country house on December 7, 1696 as a decree . Not even two years later, on July 5, 1698, Zwigott was appointed Vicar General for Carinthia and Carniola by Abbot General Nicolas Larcher of Cîteaux . On May 18, 1699, and again in 1700, he was confirmed in this office and visited the Sittich monastery in the Carniola in January 1700 and July 1701, and the Lilienfeld monastery in 1705 . As far as he was known, he had a good connection with Lilienfeld anyway; so he conducted a lively correspondence with Chrysostom Wieser, among others . On February 18, 1702 he led the voting in Viktring , in which Johannes Moser emerged as the new abbot of the monastery. In 1703 he led the election of abbot in Landstraß , at which Friedrich Hofstetter was elected abbot, and on April 9, 1707 he also led the election of abbot in Stift Neukloster , from which Robert Lang emerged as the new abbot.

During his tenure, Zwigott endeavored to take over the St. Gotthard Abbey , which, however, subsequently remained without result. Abbot Jacob, who was considered a great admirer of Mary, introduced various simplifications and changes in the service in 1699. In 1700 he had an organ made, which was presumably supplied by the A. Schwarz workshop in Graz . It is also assumed that this same organ was transferred to the parish church of Gratwein-Straßengel as early as 1738, when the Romanesque collegiate church began to be demolished, and was replaced there in 1916 by an organ from the Alb workshop .

Furthermore, he improved the economic situation of the monastery and was also able to reduce the debt, although he had to pay large sums of money to the government during the War of the Spanish Succession from 1701 to 1714. When he died on November 20, 1709 after a long illness in Rein, he left his successor, Placidus Mally , an orderly and well-ordered monastery, but also a still considerable debt burden. Mally was able to largely dismantle this in the course of his approximately 26-year tenure and stand out as the largest builder in the history of the monastery. Disciplinary problems that still existed under his predecessors are not known from Zwigott's tenure.
