Aquiline Julius Caesar or Caesar (born November 1, 1720 in Graz as Julius Caesar ; † June 2, 1792 in Weizberg near Weiz ) was an Austrian Augustinian canon and regional historian .

Life

Caesar came from a family ennobled in 1623 . He first graduated from the lower schools in Graz and attended the city's grammar school before joining the Augustinian Canons of Vorau in 1736 . As an Augustinian canon he was given the religious name Aquilin (us) . He studied philosophy and theology at the Jesuit University in Graz , where he graduated as Lic. Theol. completed. He was finally ordained a priest in 1743. He then worked as a teacher at the Vorau Abbey.

Caesar became pastor in Dechantskirchen in 1761 and city ​​pastor in Friedberg in 1765 . In 1781 he turned down a call to the chair for canon law at the University of Graz . Shortly afterwards, in 1784, he had to give up pastoral care for health reasons. He retired to Weizberg to his childhood friend Josef Peinthor, who worked there as a district dean and pastor, and continued to devote himself to writing.

Caesar wrote the first comprehensive history of Styria. He was therefore also awarded the honorary title Historiae patriae pater . In addition to the regional historical works, he wrote several theological and canonical writings.
