Helmut Jodok Mezler-Andelberg (born November 8, 1923 in Selzthal , Styria , Austria; † September 21, 2002 in Graz ) was an Austrian historian, university professor for Austrian history and head of the department for historical regional studies and comparative European legal history at the Institute for History the Karl-Franzens-University in Graz.

Life

His father, Dr. Harold Mezler-Andelberg (born November 13, 1896 - April 18, 1975) was a lawyer and mayor (1950 to 1957) in Liezen . His mother, Margaretha nee Kipferling (born June 10, 1898 - April 16, 1965) taught as a teacher in elementary schools and, among other things, also taught disabled children. Helmut J. Mezler-Andelberg was first married to Ingeborg Haberkorn (* December 16, 1922, † January 31, 1981). In 1986 he married Irmgard Malischnig (* 1947), the government councilor of the Austrian Federal Police Directorate in Graz. His daughter Barbara, born in 1955 from his first marriage, runs a handicraft with paintings and dolls in Salzburg and Obervellach / Carinthia .

Helmut J. Mezler-Andelberg passed the Matura in Graz in 1942 . In the same year he was called up by the Wehrmacht ; due to illness, however, initially postponed before the war mission. He began with the study of German language and literature and history , he after some interruptions in 1952 with the promotion of Dr. phil. graduated from the Karl Franzens University in Graz with his doctoral supervisor Heinrich Appelt (1910–1998).

The historians Karl Eder (1889–1961), Walther Kienast (1896–1985), Hans Pirchegger (1875–1973), Mathilde Uhlirz (1881–1966) and the literary historian were among his formative teachers and academic colleagues who accompanied him during his teaching activities Karl Konrad Polheim (1927–2004), the philologist Leo Jutz (1889–1962) and the Austrian historian Hermann Wiesflecker (1913–2009).

As early as 1943, Mezler-Andelberg received another draft order from the German Wehrmacht. After deployments in Italy and the former Yugoslavia, Mezler-Andelberg was wounded and admitted to the Cilli military hospital. He then worked as a medic in Lienz before he was taken prisoner of war (1945).

Mezler-Andelberg worked from 1947 to 1955 as a research assistant at the history seminar of the Karl-Franzens University. In 1955 he was appointed university assistant at the Historical Institute of the Karl Franzens University in Graz. In 1965 , Mezler-Andelberg completed his habilitation in Austrian history, with a special focus on historical regional studies and regional history, at the Karl-Franzens University in Graz. In 1970 he was given the title of associate professor, ao. Professor, then a new type, awarded. His research focus and numerous publications were the church histories of Inner Austria, in particular the legal relationships of church institutions in the Middle Ages , problems of the Reformation and the Counter-Reformation, especially in Styria. From 1974 to 1984 he was a permanent advisor for the vocational matriculation exams at the University of Graz. In 1974 he became a member of the Graz Old Town Expert Commission. From 1976 to 2002, the scientist headed the regesta department of the State Historical Commission, with an outstanding share in the regests of the Duchy of Styria . At the end of 1987 Mezler-Andelberg retired. He died in 2002 at the age of 79 of kidney failure and the complications of the severe diabetes mellitus that had accompanied him since childhood. He was buried in the St. Peter city cemetery in Graz.
