The epitaph of Candidate Pfister in the Ebrach monastery church

Candidus Pfister (also Candidus Pfister ; * in Sulzfeld am Main ; † February 26, 1704 in Ebrach ) was abbot of the Cistercian monastery in Ebrach from 1696 to 1702 .

Life

Candidus Pfister was born in Sulzfeld am Main, Lower Franconia , in the 17th century . Nothing is known about his parents, the school education of the future abbot is also not mentioned in the sources. What is certain is that Pfister entered the Ebrach Abbey very early and went through the official career here. He has been handed down as a bursarius, as well as a cellar and chancellery director of the abbey. As a monk, Pfister traveled extensively for the abbey.

After the death of his predecessor Ludwig Ludwig in May 1696, Pfister was elected on May 30, 1696 as the forty-fourth abbot of the Ebrach monastery. The acquisition of rights for 400 guilders in Frankenwinheim can be regarded as one of the first traditional official acts of Abbot Candidate . Is also on 24 November 1700 bought the Klebheimerhof from Bamberg provost Otto Philipp von Guttenberg for about 9,000 guilders.

During his term of office, Prince-Bishop Johann Philipp von Greiffenclau zu Vollraths von Würzburg reached a compromise on the position of the abbey. In 1701 a contract was signed that allowed both parties to enforce their claims. While the monks had persisted in their imperial position, the Würzburg bishops assumed that Ebrach was their own monastery.

The abbot Candidus Pfister's short term of office ended in 1702. Several strokes led to temporary paralysis, the abbot's language remained disturbed and he stuttered severely. Abbot Candidate therefore asked the vicar general of the German monasteries, Abbot Stephan I. Jung von Salem , for his resignation . After his resignation, Pfister continued to live in his apartment in the monastery. He died on February 26, 1704.

coat of arms

It is historically certain that Abbot Candidus Pfister had a personal coat of arms . It was attached to the abbot's epitaph , which can still be found in the monastery church today. However, the coat of arms is no longer legible today, which is why it cannot be described. The Pfister family coat of arms was also attached to an epitaph at St. Sebastian's Church in Sulzfeld. It's also weathered.
