Paulus II. Baumann (born September 4, 1644 in Würzburg , † April 1, 1725 in Ebrach ) was abbot of the Cistercian monastery in Ebrach from 1702 until his resignation in 1714 .

Life

Paulus II. Baumann was born on September 4, 1644 in Würzburg, Lower Franconia . The sources are silent about the parents of the future abbot, and any siblings of Paul are not mentioned either. Likewise, Baumann's school education is nowhere mentioned; the boy probably attended Latin school in his hometown before he began studying at the University of Würzburg .

When Baumann entered the monastery on August 20, 1663, he was once again tangible. On that day he made his perpetual vows and became a Cistercian monk. Seven years later, on November 9, 1670, the young Paul celebrated his first service. He then rose quickly within the monastery: he initially headed the monastery office in Sulzheim before he became a bailiff in Mönchherrnsdorf, which today belongs to Burgebrach . In the monastery itself he became a bursarius, later the office director.

After the resignation of his predecessor Candidus Pfister on 11 December 1702 monks Baumann chose the same day to the forty-fifth abbot of the monastery Ebrach. One of the first official acts was a trip to Upper Bavaria. Abbot Paulus II mediated here between Theobald I of Aldersbach Abbey and Maximilian II Emanuel of Bavaria. After Theobald's election, there had been disagreements between the two parties.

In Ebrach, Paul began to refurbish the monastery church. For this purpose he bought two large candelabra . At the same time he had some buildings renewed in the monastery villages. He rebuilt the monastery courtyards in Waldschwind, Weyer, Rödelsee and Würzburg. With increasing age Paul suffered from kidney stones and in 1714 asked Abbot General Stephan I Jung von Salem for his resignation. This was granted to him on August 26, 1714. As an emeritus abbot, Paul II continued to live in the monastery. He died on April 1, 1725.
