Johann Mayer (politician, 1922)

Johann Mayer (born May 14, 1922 in Bad Mitterndorf ; † June 11, 2005 in Anthering ) was an Austrian politician ( ÖVP ) and gendarmerie officer. From 1965 to 1984 he was a member of the Federal Council and mayor of Anthering.

education and profession

Mayer first attended elementary school between 1928 and 1934 and worked as a farm worker. He subsequently learned the profession of bricklayer and attended vocational school from 1939 to 1940. After the outbreak of the Second World War , he was drafted into military service in 1940. He served in the war until 1945 and after his return worked from 1946 to 1947 as state secretary of the Austrian youth movement in Salzburg. From 1947 to 1948 he was employed as District Party Secretary of the People's Party in Tamsweg and then joined the Austrian Gendarmerie. Here he was employed between 1948 and 1983 as a gendarmerie officer at the state gendarmerie command for Salzburg, where he rose to the position of gendarmerie department inspector. During his service he graduated from the Gendarmerie Central School in Mödling in Lower Austria between 1959 and 1960 .

Politics and functions

Johann Mayer became a member of the Austrian People's Party and was involved in the ÖVP sub-organization, the Austrian Workers' Association (ÖAAB). From 1967 to 1980 he was regional chairman of the ÖAAB Salzburg as well as regional chairman of the comradeship of the executive branch of Austria in Salzburg. In local politics he was active in Anthering, where he held the office of mayor of Anthering from 1969 to 1979. He was also deputy chairman of the Salzburg state executive of the Austrian trade union federation from 1966 to 1984 and chairman of the Salzburg state board of the public service union between 1967 and 1983 . He represented the ÖVP Salzburg from July 19, 1965 to May 15, 1984 in the Austrian Federal Council.
