Following Thomas Gainsborough and Joshua Reynolds, Johann Philipp Bach created over 100 sensitive portraits (paintings and pastels) of Meiningen citizens and court employees, which contemporaries compared with works by Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein .
