Life

Johann Philipp was the second-born and eldest son of Johann Caspar I. Freiherr von Cobenzl zu Prossegg, Lueg, Herr zu St. Daniel etc. (* 1610), District Administrator in Krain and German Order Commander and (Anna) Katharina Countess von Lanthieri (* 1640). At the coronation of the eleven-year-old Joseph I as Roman-German King on January 26, 1690 in Augsburg, Johann Philipp Freiherr von Cobenzl was solemnly knighted by the young king with another 21 cavaliers , mostly holders of hereditary positions or treasurers. In 1674 he became captain of Trieste, then from 1697 until his death in 1702 governor of Gorizia. Johann Philipp II. Count Cobenzl zu Prossegg married on May 15, 1661 in Gabrje Johanna (Zanina) von Lanthieri (* around 1640, † 28 July 1678), Star Cross Order Lady and daughter of Franz Graf von Lanthieri zu Wippach and Cassandra Countess of Discounta. The marriage had six daughters, including Katharina Cassandra († 1666), abbess of the Clariss convent in Gorizia, and four sons, including Johann Caspar II. Count Cobenzl (1664–1742), governor of Görz and Krain, and Leopold Ferdinand (1674–1722) , Provost of Laibach.

Offices

After the counts of Kiefel had died out, Emperor Leopold I gave Johann Philipp and his family the office of hereditary servants in the princes of Gorizia in 1698.
