Johann Philipp Lemke also Johann Philipp Lembke (* 1631 in Nuremberg ; † 1711 or 1713 in Stockholm ) was a German painter who worked for a long time in Italy and Sweden . Best known are his depictions of battles and hunting scenes.

Life

Lemke was trained in Hamburg by masters of the Dutch School and stayed in Italy from 1653 to 1673 to study. There he lived mainly in Rome , where Il Bamboccio was his model.

Probably on the initiative of David Klöcker Ehrenstrahl , King Karl XI called him . 1683 to Stockholm, where he arrived in October. Under the supervision of Erik Dahlberg , Lemke created some panels based on Dahlberg's sketches on a royal commission. He was able to deliver the painting Battle of Halmstad and the first panel for the Battle of Lund in 1684. In the end, there were four smaller paintings and 20 large panels with battles that were initially hung up in Drottningholm Palace . Lemke depicted the battles almost from a bird's eye view, with the king or fighting units in the foreground. The artistic value of these paintings deteriorated due to improper handling and rough cleaning in the 18th century. In 1806 A. F. Skjöldebrand engraved a few copies of the plates.

Lemke also painted a large number of small-format pictures. Since he usually did not sign them, they were later often wrongly assigned to other painters. Lemke spent his last years in economic difficulties. He could not sell enough paintings and was waiting for half of the wages for the commissioned work of the Swedish king mentioned above.
