Johann Rurer (* around 1480 in Bamberg , † 1542 in Ansbach ) was a Protestant theologian and reformer.

Life

Rurer emerged as one of the most active representatives of the Reformation movement in the Franconian area " below the mountains ". He was born in Bamberg , where his parents moved from Hollfeld in Upper Franconia . Nothing is known about his youth. He may have studied in Ingolstadt . In 1512 he received a vicarie at St. Gumbertstift in Ansbach . Margrave Casimir appointed the respected and proven man to be his court preacher.

As early as 1523 he preached in Ansbach in the Reformation sense. The author of the evangelical advice will be seen in him. On Palm Sunday 1525, Rurer held the first German Protestant church service with the Lord's Supper in "both forms". When Margrave Casimir wanted to introduce a new church order in his territory, Rurer tried to change his mind with his "Christian instruction of a pastor to his master".

This publication, published in 1526, which consisted of 40 points, caused a sensation and caused the author to be displeased by the sovereign. He therefore left Ansbach before he was arrested like his friend, the Margrave Chancellor Georg Vogler . Rurer was accepted by Duke Friedrich von Liegnitz , but was called back to his homeland after the death of Margrave Casimir and reinstated as a provost, while Andreas Althamer became the city pastor.

Rurer took part in the Schwabach Convention in June 1528, chaired the meetings that began in mid-October, worked on the “Brandenburg-Nuremberg Church Order” of 1533 and showed initiative during the second visit to the Franconian areas. He was in the retinue of Margrave Georg at the Reichstag in Augsburg in 1530, where he also preached several times. Finally, the margrave sent him to Hagenau and Worms for the religious talks .
