Johann Sehwers

Johann Sehwers ( Latvian Janis Zēvers * June 16 . Jul / 28. June  1868 greg. In Nerwensberg at Old Pebalg ; † 7. November 1940 in Poznań ) was a Baltic chess composer , linguist and teacher .

Life

Sehwers was born into a farming family near Vecpiebalga . After attending a teacher training college in Tartu , he worked as a school teacher in various places. He also used the summers from 1910 to 1914 for studies at the University of Zurich . It was there that he obtained his doctorate in philology in 1918 . From 1925 he was chairman of the Latvian Literary Society . In addition to a large number of scientific publications in specialist journals, Sehwers published linguistic and cultural-historical studies in 1936, primarily on the German influence in Latvian , which is regarded as his main work. In 1939 he and his wife Alma (née Hühn) participated in the resettlement of the Baltic Germans to Posen. He passed away a year later.

Sehwers has been participating in local chess tournaments since his youth, and at around 30 he began composing endgame studies . This resulted in around 100 endgame studies , 87 of which he published in an anthology in 1922 together with a portrait of himself. After that, his study composition largely ebbed away.
