Johann Sobeck

Johann Sobeck (born April 30, 1831 in Luditz near Karlsbad , † June 9, 1914 in Hanover ) was a Bohemian composer and clarinetist .

life and work

From the age of 12, Sobeck studied clarinet with Franz Tadeusz Blatt and composition with Johann Friedrich Kittl at the Prague Conservatory . After completing his studies in 1849, he played for two years at the Baden-Baden Theater Orchestra as solo clarinetist. In 1851 he was appointed first clarinetist at the Royal Theater in Hanover and worked there for around 50 years until his retirement, from 1853 with the title of Royal Court and Chamber Musician. From Hanover, he made repeated concert tours within Germany as a virtuoso, and Sobeck also taught numerous students.

As a composer, Sobeck left behind in particular works for the clarinet, including opera fantasies, concerts and concert pieces. He also wrote 4 wind quintets . Sobeck arranged the unfinished violin concerto WoO 5 by Ludwig van Beethoven .
