from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Steger (also Stöger ) (* in Augsburg ) was a 17th century painter who worked in Bohemia.

Johann Steger came from Augsburg and married in Vienna in 1663 , where he is mentioned in a document in 1665, 1666 and 1669. In 1677 he painted the frescoes in the dome and the 6 chapels of the Marian pilgrimage church in Heiligenberg near Olomouc ( Svatý Kopeček ), in the Joseph chapel there is his signature "Johann Stöger fecit". The frescoes were restored by Johann Christoph Handke in 1730 and partly painted over and restored again in 1932. Further works are frescoes in the castle of the Prince-Bishop of Olmütz in Wischau (not preserved) as well as a cycle of frescoes with the legend of St. Romedius in the Romedius chapel of the Countess Thun's castle in Choltitz near Chrudim in Bohemia. Several graphic sheets for dissertations were created based on Steger's templates.
