Johannes Tobias Major

Johannes Tobias Major (born February 2, 1615 in Jena ; † April 25, 1655 ibid) was a German Lutheran theologian .

Life

The son of Johannes Major completed a degree in philosophy at the University of Jena under Johann Michael Dilherr , which he completed on February 11, 1634 with the academic degree of a master's degree in philosophy. Then he went to theological studies at the University of Leipzig , where he was taught by Heinrich Höpfner . The call of Johann Gerhard drew him back to the University of Jena. In keeping with the customs of the time, he went on a scholarly journey from there. This led him to universities in Holland , France and Italy .

After he returned to Jena in 1640, he moved to the University of Wittenberg . Under Paul Röber , he obtained the degree of a licentiate in theology on September 7, 1643 , became associate professor of theology at the University of Jena and for that reason received his doctorate in theology in Wittenberg on October 14, 1645 that same year . After the death of his father in 1646 he was given a full theological professorship in Jena. He presided over this office for nine years until his sudden death. He also participated in the organizational tasks of the Salina and was rector of the Alma Mater in the winter semesters of 1647 and 1653 .
