Johann Tongers

Johann Heinrich Tongers (born September 6, 1881 in Langeoog ; † April 26, 1969 there ) was a German pastor , local researcher and author .

Life

Johann Tongers worked as a pastor in South Africa and East Friesland , among other places , where he held the second pastor's post at St. Magnus Church in Esens from 1920 to 1927 . He was also a pastor on the East Frisian North Sea island of Baltrum and was a member of the so-called bathing commission after 1930 , which regulated the affairs of the bathing administration of the " Seebads Baltrum".

As a local researcher, Johann Tongers mainly dealt with the history of the island of Langeoog and its development as a “North Sea resort” (historical postcard, approx. 1909).

In retirement he lived again at his place of origin, the East Frisian North Sea island Langeoog , and worked as a local researcher and folklorist. He wrote about the history, special features and attractions of the island Langeoog several writings as early " island and Guide learned" all several editions, and also published ethnographic posts about the area in the Lower Saxony State Office for folklore at the University of Göttingen published Specialized journal “ Schriften zur Niederdeutschen Volkskunde” . In 1961 his book Our Langeoog as it became appeared . His writings on the island history of Langeoog were and still are widely used and cited as sources.

Tongers was involved in the local Heimatverein Langeoog e. V. , of which he was chairman from 1954. His son Habbo Tongers later also chaired the club and his grandson Hendrik Tongers was the incumbent chairman of the Langeooger Heimatverein from 1990 to 2011.

Honors

In memory of Johann Tongers, a street in the southern part of the municipality of Langeoog was named Johann-Tongers-Pad .
