Johann Traugott Bartelmus (born December 26, 1735 , Bielitz , Silesia or Biala , Malopolska ; † September 15, 1809 , Teschen , Austrian Empire ) was a Lutheran theologian and the first superintendent of Moravia, Silesia and Galicia .

Life

Traugott Bartelmus was a son of the Germans Siegmund and Dorothea Bartelmus. He attended the Protestant school in Biala and the grammar school in Teschen . He then studied Protestant theology in Wittenberg and Leipzig .

In 1760 he became pastor at the Jesus Church in Teschen . In 1780 he also became the school inspector of the local school. In 1782 he became a clergyman in the consistory of Teschen. Since 1782 he was the first pastor of the Erlöserkirche in Bielitz .

In 1784, Traugott Bartelmus was appointed the first evangelical superintendent for Moravia and Silesia by Emperor Joseph II , to whom the new parishes in Galicia were also subordinate. He laid the foundations for a church and school organization for the evangelical church in Galicia. He tried to have a uniform order of worship in his administrative area, but he did not succeed. He created a liturgical reform and a new hymn book that remained in use until 1853.

In 1800, Superintendent Bartelmus founded a church archive and a library in Teschen and created the school rules for the local school. In 1804 he handed over the responsibility for Galicia to a new superintendent, but remained superintendent for Moravia and Silesia until his death in 1809.

Traugott Bartelmus wrote some small theological writings in German. He also wrote some of his church ordinances in Polish.
