The Evangelical Superintendentur AB Galizien was a diocese of the Evangelical Church AB in Austria , which existed from 1804 to 1918.

Structures

In 1913, 33 parishes in Galicia and Bukovina belonged to the superintendent .

Seniorate

It was divided into four seniorates :

  • the Helvetic Seniorat for the Reformed Churches
  • the Middle Seniorat for Middle Galicia, seat in Gelsendorf
  • the Eastern Seniorate for Eastern Galicia, seat in Lviv
  • the Western Seniorate for Western Galicia, seat in Biala

Superintendent

The church was run by a superintendent . The office of the superintendent was dependent on where the respective superintendent worked as parish priest. Until 1870 the seat was in Lemberg , from 1871 to 1885 in Biala , from 1886 to 1896 in Gelsendorf and from 1897 to 1918 again in Biala.

The superintendents were (term of office in brackets):

Superintendent of Moravia, Silesia and Galicia

Superintendent of Galicia

A special feature of the superintendent was that it included not only Lutheran (AB) and mixed denomination (AB / HB) but also purely Reformed (HB) congregations that were not subject to the Evangelical Church HB in Austria .

history

First parish in the Kingdom of Poland

In 1759 the first Galician-German Protestant congregation was founded in Hinterwalden (Zaleszczyki) in the Kingdom of Poland .

Evangelical communities in the Habsburg Monarchy

After Galicia was taken over by the Habsburg Monarchy , the Protestant Germans received special religious rights under the imperial patent of October 1, 1774. In that year they were subordinated to the new superintendent of Moravia, Silesia and Galicia . In 1775 the new parishes in Lemberg , Jaroslau , Zamość , Brody and Hinterwalden (Zaleszczyki) received imperial permission to employ a pastor. It was not until 1778 that a German clergyman was found in Ephraim Gottlob Hoffmann who was ready to settle permanently in Lemberg.

The tolerance patent of September 17, 1781 from Emperor Joseph II further improved their possibilities. In 1789 the first seniorates were created for West Galicia and East Galicia. In 1804 the Protestant parishes were merged into the newly founded Evangelical Superintendentur AB Galizien , after Galicia had become formally an integral part of the Austrian Empire.

Foundation of the Evangelical Churches A. and HB in Lesser Poland

With the fall of Austria-Hungary in 1918, the superintendent was separated from the church leadership in Vienna. The congregations had the opportunity to join the Evangelical Augsburg Church in Poland or the Uniate Evangelical Church in Poland , but decided to go independent: in 1920, the Evangelical Church A. and HB in Lesser Poland was established as the successor to the Evangelical Superintendentur AB Galicia .
