Live and act

Samuel Bredetzky was born in the village of Deutsch-Jakubjan (now Chminianske Jakubovany , Slovakia ) in the Sharosher County of the Kingdom of Hungary . His father Matthias Bredetzky worked for the local evangelical parish as a school teacher , cantor and organist . The mother Susanna, nee Fabry, came from the town of Leibitz (today Ľubica ) and soon brought the boy there to live with his grandparents. When the teaching and cantor position in Leibitz became vacant, his parents followed suit in 1777.

First the boy took part in his father's school lessons in Leibitz, then from 1785 he attended high school in Käsmark . In October 1786 his parents sent him to the Protestant Lyceum in Ödenburg , where he continued his school education until spring 1788. He then went back to high school in Käsmark and then, in 1789, moved to the Protestant high school in Csetnek to learn the Slovak language . In the two years he then spent here, he practiced also in rhetoric and adopted the philosophy - colloquia in part, by the Rector (Hungarian Csis) headed the school, Thomas Tsisch. Looking back, he writes about this time: “Among my teachers, Rector Tsisch in Csetnek has all my respect and love. [...] He awakened the love of science in my soul. ” In 1791 Bredetzky moved into the Lyceum in Ödenburg again and stayed at this traditional Protestant educational institution until he graduated in April 1796.

Then he and his college friend Jakob Glatz went on a trip to Germany. She went to the university town of Jena in the Duchy of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach, where both decided to expand their studies at the “ Alma Mater Jenensis ”.

Bredetzky stayed in Jena for two years and studied with the professors , Griesbach , Schütz , Paulus and Fichte , theology , philosophy and natural history . Looking back, he writes: “I owe it to Bergrath Lenz that I found a taste for mineralogy and geognosy , [...] Jena was then in its most beautiful bloom. Fichte and Paulus drew the attention of the German public, while Hofrath Schütz, the venerable Griesbach, Loderer and Hufeland added new palms to the acquired palms. [...] A real treat for us were the lectures by Hofrath Schütz on Horace and on education . With what ease this man developed the Kantian views on philosophical subjects! with what magic he drew us into the Horatian world! [...] I will never forget the beautiful days (that I spent ) in Jena. "

On April 15, 1798, Bredetzky left Jena and traveled back to his homeland. On September 6th, he was appointed professor at the newly established community school in Ödenburg. He then worked at this teaching institute until September 16, 1802. After that, he went to Vienna for two and a half years , where he worked as a vicar and catechist for the Protestant parish . At that time he made friends with the topographer Johann Matthias Korabinsky , a compatriot for whom he wrote an apt obituary after his death in June 1811.

In 1805 Bredetzky was called to Cracow as a preacher and senior . On April 1, 1805, he left Vienna and went on a fortnightly trip to Galicia . It was only possible for him to develop as a pastor in the unified Protestant parish in Krakow and Podgorze for just under a year, then he was transferred to the East Galician city of Lemberg as a representative for superintendent Josef Paulini, who died in January 1806 . There he was now active as a pastor and senior and administered the orphaned Galician diocese until January 29, 1808, when he was appointed spiritual director of the Evangelical Superintendentur AB of the Crown Land of Galicia after a meeting of the Imperial and Royal Evangelical Consistory AB in Vienna . Bredetzky held the office of superintendent of the diocese for only four years. On June 20 or 25, 1812, he died at the age of 40 at his place of work in Lemberg.
