Kamień is a village in the Rzeszowski powiat of the Subcarpathian Voivodeship in Poland . It is the seat of the rural community of the same name with about 6900 inhabitants.

geography

The village of Kamień is divided into four school departments : Kamień-Górka, Kamień-Podlesie, Kamień-Prusina and Krzywa Wieś. The hamlet of Morgi is part of the Kamień-Podlesie Schulzenamt.

history

The place was founded in 1578 by Stefan Batory under the name Wola Kamień . It was in the Sandomir Voivodeship .

During the first partition of Poland in 1772, Kamień became part of the new Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria of the Habsburg Empire (from 1804).

In 1783 in the course of the Josephine colonization , German colonists of Lutheran and Reformed denominations were settled. The colony was named Steinau , a translation of kamień ( stone ) with the suffix -au, and became an independent municipality, now Nowy Kamień .

In 1900 the municipality of Kamień had 885 houses with 5122 inhabitants, of which 5096 Polish-speaking, 25 German-speaking, 4869 Roman Catholic, 2 Greek Catholic, 226 Jews, 25 of other faiths.

The Roman Catholic parish was established in 1907.

In 1918, after the end of the First World War and the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, Kamień came to Poland.

In 1921 the municipality of Kamień had 891 houses with 4703 inhabitants, of which 4701 were Poles, 2 of other nationalities, 4,499 Roman Catholics, 2 Greek Catholics, 1 Protestant, 201 Jews.

During the Second World War it was part of the Krakow district of the General Government .

From 1975 to 1998 Kamień was part of the Rzeszów Voivodeship .
