Johann Ulrich Schiess (entrepreneur)

Johann Ulrich Schiess (born September 12, 1807 in Herisau ; † December 11, 1868 in Herisau; legal resident in Herisau) was a Swiss textile entrepreneur, mayor , member of the small council from the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden .

Life

Johann Ulrich Schiess was a son of Johannes Schiess and brother-in-law of Johannes Roth . In 1828 he married Johanna Barbara Nef, daughter of Johann Jakob Nef. He attended private schools in Herisau and Hofwil . He then completed a commercial apprenticeship in his father's company and in Manchester . In 1827 Schiess joined his father's trading company. He took over this later. He focused on the wholesale of yarns . Schiess was the richest citizen of Herisau and made significant donations for the benefit of the community. In 1863 he gave up the business for lack of a successor. Schiess was a councilor in Herisau from 1837 to 1840 . From 1840 to 1842 he served as mayor . From 1842 to 1848 and from 1851 to 1852 he held the office of Ausserrhoder Landesseckelmeister . In the years 1852 and 1853 he was provincial governor. From 1850 to 1851 and from 1856 to 1859 he was a member of the dual district administrator. From 1859 to 1862 he served as a councilor . From 1842 to 1863 he was salt fund administrator.
