Johann Volkamer (manufacturer)
Johann Volkamer (born March 10, 1576 in Lobenstein , † 1661 in Nuremberg ) was a German merchant , factory owner and garden lover.
Life
Johann Volkamer (also: Volcamer , Volckamer , Volkammer ) came from a family based in Lobenstein in the Vogtland . After completing a commercial apprenticeship in Nuremberg, he founded a silk manufacture in Rovereto . Having become prosperous, he laid out the "Volkamer'schen Garten im Gostenhof" in Nuremberg, which introduced sons and grandchildren to botany. Johann Volkamer was married to Helena Ayrer, a daughter of the Nuremberg theater poet Jakob Ayrer . His son Johann Georg Volkamer the Elder and his grandson Johann Volkamer became well-known physicians, botanists and writers. The grandson Johann Christoph Volkamer also became a manufacturer, businessman and botanist.
At the age of 85, Johann Volkamer died in 1661 as a Banco Assessor in Nuremberg.
