Johann Weißheimer (in official documents Johann Weißheimer II. , Also Johannes Weisheimer or Weissheimer ; * October 25, 1797 in Osthofen ; † September 8, 1883 ibid) was the father of the composer Wendelin Weißheimer and the most highly taxed landowner around the middle of the 19th century in Rheinhessen , mayor of Osthofen and during the 1848 revolution politician in the first chamber of the Hessian state parliament. Because of his extensive studies of the Osthofen history, he is also called the "chronicler" of Osthofen.

family

Johann Weißheimer II. Was born in 1797 as the eldest son of Johann Weißheimer I (1774–1834) and his wife Margarethe Weißheimer née Dechen (t) (1772–1825) in his father's estate, the Osthofen stone mill.

Weissheimer married on October 9, 1821 in Osthofen Ottilie, née Best (1802-1884), daughter of the landowner, brewer, innkeeper and mayor (1822-1831) of Osthofen, Johann Wendelin Best. It is thanks to this that his youngest son Wendelin Weißheimer was able to start studying music , which laid the foundation for his career. With financial aid, Weißheimer made a significant contribution to the fact that the composer Richard Wagner , who was in constant financial need , was able to gain a foothold again in Germany.

Life and accomplishments

Through him, the Osthofen stone mill became the most important estate in Rheinhessen around the middle of the 19th century . As mayor of Osthofen between 1831 and 1843, Weißheimer carried out many reforms, such as the introduction of the volunteer fire brigade or an alms fund. Osthofen was expanded beyond the medieval borders for the first time during his tenure. From 1842 to 1864 he was a member of the local council in Osthofen. As a member of the 1st Hessian Chamber of Estates , he represented the interests of his homeland in Darmstadt during the 1848 revolution and suggested reforms. He was elected on November 28, 1849 for constituency 24 (Westhofen and Osthofen) and took his deputy oath on September 12, 1850 . In 1850 he was re-elected, but left the state parliament with the election in 1851.

In his 1500-page diary he reports in detail over 70 years of his life. It not only describes the family situation of the Weißheimer family, but also provides information about religious and local political conditions in Osthofen. Of particular interest are Johann Weißheimer's II observations in the 1848 revolution. His more than 2000 pages comprehensive studies on Osthofen are among the most important sources of Osthofen history from the Middle Ages to the 19th century.
