Richard Schmidt (Indologist)
Johann Wilhelm Richard Schmidt (born January 29, 1866 in Aschersleben ; † November 15, 1939 in Münster / Westphalia ) was a German Indologist , translator and university professor .
Life
The teacher's son was in 1890 in Halle (Saale) Dr. phil. doctorate and habilitation .
He translated the Hexenhammer (today attributed to Heinrich Kramer) from Latin into German (1906). The translation "was violently attacked from the beginning because of its illegible style, the numerous omissions and its errors, which in some cases distort the meaning to the point of being ridiculous."
As an Indologist, Schmidt translated the Kama Sutra from Sanskrit, although interestingly enough he translated some spicy passages into Latin instead of German. As a private lecturer at the University of Halle, his main interest was in creating reliable text editions and translations of works from ancient Indian narrative literature and in developing Sanskrit texts on erotology. In doing so, he made important source material accessible to researchers in other disciplines.
From 1910 he was a professor in Münster / Westphalia. In 1933 he joined the NSDAP (membership number 2,492,244).
