Life

Johann Wilhelm von Eicken was born as the son of pastor Gerhard von Eicken (1707–1765) and his wife Catharina Diergardt (1712–1778) in Mettmann . 1769 he went to Mülheim an der Ruhr , married his cousin Elisabeth living there and founded in 1770 a colonial merchandise trade . The focus was on tobacco , with the trade soon followed by the manufacture of pipe and snuff tobacco. With the help of his uncle and father-in-law Hermann von Eicken, who came from a wealthy, long-established Mülheim merchant family, he became a respected member of Mülheim society.

The tobacco company Johann Wilhelm Eicken had its headquarters in Mülheim an der Ruhr for more than 100 years , until the descendants of the company founder moved the headquarters to Hamburg in 1886 and from Hamburg to Lübeck in 1983 .

Marriage and offspring

In 1769 he married his Mülheim cousin Elisabeth von Eicken (1744–1806). They had a total of nine children, with the eldest son named Gerhard (1770-1824) and the youngest son named Hermann Wilhelm (1786-1832) taking over the company after the father's death.
