from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann von Wespien (born April 18, 1700 - March 30, 1759 ) was a cloth manufacturer and mayor of the imperial city of Aachen .

Life

John of Wespien married on 11 June 1725 from the present-day Belgium lying Eupen native Anna Maria Schmitz. The marriage made him very wealthy. His marriage was childless. Wespien's financial situation enabled him to give the economically troubled city loans. The Maria-Spital in Jakobstrasse, which at that time had rooms with 27 sick beds, goes back to a foundation in 1769 by Wespiens and his wife, who gave it its name.

Von Wespien was elected mayor of Aachen in 1756 and 1759 . He died in 1759 during his second term in office.

Construction activity

Von Wespien acquired the former Cloubert house on the corner of Heppion and Kleinmarschierstrasse in Aachen . He had it partially torn down and in 1734 commissioned the Aachen baroque master builder Johann Joseph Couven to build a private and factory building, the Wespienhaus , from the remains of the house . Construction began in 1735 and ended in 1737. According to the client's specifications, this should be a representative mansion. It took 40 years to finish the interior of the house. Von Wespien did not see the completion.

When Gut Kalkofen was offered for sale in 1748 , von Wespien showed interest and bought the building. However, the acquired form did not meet his expectations and he commissioned the Aachen baroque master builder Johann Joseph Couven to convert the building into a pleasure palace . The cost of this work was 100,000 Reichstaler.

The interior of the Theresienkirche , designed by Johann Joseph Couven, was donated by Johann von Wespien in 1754. Funds also flowed from Wespien's foundation for the facade and the portal of the Chapel of the Beheading of John the Baptist in Eupen .
